I feel fortunate to have raised my kids in Iowa City -- where the University of Iowa is, and a very liberal community. It's a blue oasis in this red state (that's a reference to liberal vs conservative political parties in the US). I talk about the process taking my oldest through his trans changes in a story here on Medium. What I worry about now is what he may not be ready for as he moves out into a world less welcoming that what he grew up with.
